    English 192

    3 units credit/no credit

    Required Texts: Reading Drills by Fry, and Student Workbook. You'll also need a good notebook, a blank computer diskette, and Scantron answer sheets.

    English 192 is a reading class designed for students who are generally good readers, but who wish to improve their reading speed as well as comprehension of academic reading. There is extensive use of computer assisted instruction to drill vocabulary and to practice skills covered in class. This is a credit/no credit course.

    General study skills, memory improvement, speed reading, vocabulary building through prefixes and roots and context clues, comprehension improvement, critical reading, and propaganda.

    Class Schedule

    This outline may be changed as class proceeds in order to accommodate a particular section's strength or weakness and to work around holidays and unexpected class cancellations. In addition to these subjects, we will be doing weekly drills with the tachistoscope and additional outside readings from current magazines and newspapers.

    Week 1 class introductions, pre-testing, lab work orientation.

    Week 2 introduction to speed reading, memory tips, first lab work hours due in the English Lab, study skills.

    Week 3 using the card, word-attack skills, speed reading drills, first lab work hours due in the Learning Center.

    Week 4 using the "sweep" method, using the context, speed reading drills, book review book selection and analysis.

    Week 5 using the "hop" method, starting Latin and Greek roots, speed reading drills.

    Week 6 quiz on Speed Reading, continuing "hop", continuing Latin and Greek roots, speed reading drills.

    Week 7 other speed reading methods, continuing Latin and Greek ,roots, speed reading drills.

    Week 8 review of Latin and Greek roots, mid-term, speed reading drills, minimum of seven hours of lab work in the English Lab should be completed by this week.

    Week 9 reading and understanding analogies, speed reading drills.

    Week 10 more work on analogies, and comprehension building, first book report due.

    Week 11 introduction to critical reading, speed reading drills.

    Week 12 detecting bias, looking for shades of meaning, speed reading drills.

    Week 13 distinguishing between fact and opinion, speed reading drills.

    Week 14 propaganda and advertising, speed reading drills.

    Week 15 more propaganda and advertising.

    Week 16 review, review, review, post-testing.

    Week 17 second book report due, review, final exams, conferences

    English 190

    Week 7 Review, midterm on prefixes and roots, page 156.

    Week 8 Return tests, begin basic comprehension, outlining from lists of objects, outlining from paragraphs, page 161.

    Week 9 General vs. specific, finding topic sentences, getting the main idea, page 165.

    Week 10 More getting the main idea practice, page 169, first book report due.

    Week 11 Following a sequence of ideas, drawing conclusions, inferences, page 185.

    Week 12 Review, begin analogies, page 192.

    English 188 is a reading course designed for students who lack basic skills. Various word attack skills are covered, including phonics, word analysis through the study of prefixes and word roots, and the use of context clues. Methods to improve comprehension are covered. There is extensive use of computer assisted instruction to drill vocabulary and to practice skills covered in class. This is a credit/no credit course.

    Work Required in All Reading Classes:

    registration and drops:

    ....It is your responsibility to see that you are officially registered or dropped from a class. If you stop coming to class without dropping officially, you may get a "No-Credit" in this class. You may also be dropped by the teacher for excessive absences.

    expectations:

    ....That you attend class, avoiding unnecessary tardiness and absences, pass the 3 big tests, complete at least 16 hours of lab work this semester, and improve at least two grade levels in your reading. This is a credit/no-credit class. You cannot pass if you miss more than four classes, fail the tests or fail to complete lab work and written assignments.

    English Lab:

    ....One hour of lab work must be done each week in the English Lab (AD 238-242). In the English Lab you will be working on both the Macintosh and Apple IIe computers. A $5 materials fee must be paid in the bookstore. Show your receipt to the aide at the desk at the first time you do lab work. In order to get credit for lab work, leave your Glendale College Picture I.D. at the desk each time you do your work. You may work any time that the Lab is open, but not during the time you should be in class.

    Learning Center

    ....You also must do at least two hours a month lab work in the Learning Center. Sign up with Miss Fojo to reserve time on these machines. The computers will be pre-programed with your assignments. Extra hours of lab work will count as extra credit.

    English Lab Materials Voucher

    By the end of the first week of the semester, to use the English Lab, you will need:

    1. a Glendale College Picture I.D. and

    2. a Sticker on the I.D. showing that youÕve paid the **materials fee for the lab in the College Bookstore.

    The fee is $5 and is good all semester. The fee pays only for the cost of disposable supplies, i.e. paper, printer ribbon,toner, etc. To obtain the sticker, fill out a voucher form, take it to the bookstore clerk and pay the fee. Bring your receipt back to the English Lab. A sticker on your card will show payment.

    **You may substitute the payment of the fee by presenting in trade to the English Lab Coordinator a ream of standard white 8 1Ú2 X 11, 20 lb. LaserPrinter paper (like Xerox 4200 DP) and an Apple ImageWriter printer ribbon. See Mr.Doyle (AD240, 818-240-1000, ext. 5343) for details. Keep checking this page for more information.
