Philippe's, which has been in Downtown Los Angeles since 1912. It has
many vintage touches, such as this wooden phone booth. |

Our tour guide, Darrell Kunitomi, started
with a discussion of the Times' place in Los Angeles history.

Darrell showed us all around the
newsroom and other offices. We are in front of the Test Kitchen,
where featured dishes are prepared for the Food Section.

The MC101s had an excellent opportunity to see how a
major metropolitan newspaper operates, and to ask questions about
it.

Of course, the paper version of the Times
is quickly being supplanted by the online version. Mary Forgione talked
about her job putting out the online edition. Several days after this
field trip, she would be off to Washington D.C. to cover the
Presidential Inauguration
